Convert CM to Inches Without a Calculator (Fast Mental Math)
You can convert centimeters to inches mentally in under three seconds once you know one of these three shortcuts. The exact formula is 1 inch = 2.54 cm, but no one wants to divide by 2.54 in their head.
Shortcut 1: Divide by 2.5 (Best Quick Estimate)
Dividing by 2.5 is much easier than dividing by 2.54, and the result is only about 1.6% off, usually close enough.
Method: double the cm number, then divide by 5.
- 10 cm becomes 10 × 2 = 20, then 20 ÷ 5 = 4 inches (exact: 3.94")
- 30 cm becomes 60, then 12, so 12 inches (exact: 11.81")
